He was predeceased by: his parents, Carlos Davis and Bessie Lucille Davis; his son Desse Jr.; his wife Nellie; his sister Nina K. Davis Bell; his son-in-law Octavious TaShawn Linder; and his grandchildren, Bryson Zackery, Byron Octavious and Bella Ann Linder.
He is survived by: his children, John and Natalie; his siblings, Annie Vaughn Godfrey (James) of Atlanta and Jesse Davis (Bernetta) of Swainsboro; and his grandson Brayden Nicholas Cordal Linder. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins, other extended family and friends.
In 1993, he was honored as a National Educator of the Year by the Milken Family Foundation.
