He was predeceased by: his parents, Alvis Pursell Sr. and Arles Spruill Pursell. He is survived by: his brother Alvis Pursell Jr.; his wife Gloria Dyer Pursell; his children, David Pursell (Melanie), Jill Pursell Campbell (Todd) and Lisa Pursell Goodwin (Dan); and his sister Sandra Shafer. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
