He was loved and cherished by many people including: his spouse Patricia Wheless Mattox; his parents, Jesse James Mattox and Emma Rosalie Wheelis Mattox; his children, Vance Mattox (Brenda) of Lexington and Corrie Mattox (Tony) of Lexington; and his grandchildren, Jessie Mattox, Peyton Mattox, Eli Mattox and Coop Mattox. He was also cherished by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church Youth Fund or the Oglethorpe County High School Booster Club.
