She was predeceased by: her parents, Benjamin Joseph (B. J.) and Nianza Freeman James; her husband Dr. Ernest S. Brown; and her grandchildren, Marissa Townsend (Will) and Hakim Howard.
She is survived by: her sons, Ernest L. Annetta (Nettie) and Anthony James Gilford; her sister Myrtice James Lewis; her nieces, Tammara Ross-Lewis (Desiree) and Tonya Lewis; her sister-in-law Mary Brown Jenkins; and her friend Shirley Philips. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren along with one grand niece.
