He was predeceased by: his parents, Andrew James Bates and Charlotte Hill Bates of Cherokee County; his wife Dorothy Collett Bates; and his daughter Tina Bates Arnold. He is survived by: his son Ricky Melvin; his daughter-in-law Marcia Vandiver Bates; his grandchildren, Dustin Chad Bates, Kelly Bates and Julian Locke Arnold (Cara Henderson Arnold); his great grandchildren, Adam Chad and Cole Locke Arnold; his sister Joyce Moore; and his siblings-in-law, Padge Reece, Grace Collett, Janet Collett and Verne Reece. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
