He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Markwell and Jane Markwell. He is survived by: his wife Linda Markwell; his daughter Laurie Markwell Cole; and his granddaughters, Lindleigh of Cumming, Ashlyn Cole of Cumming and Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary's honor to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorder Center or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
