He was predeceased by: his parents, James C. Thompson and Martha Carter Thompson; and his siblings, Rosie Williams, Bobbie Lyles and Donnie Thompson.

He is survived by: his wife Opal Knowles Thompson; his children, Tracy Edgar (Norman) of Newnan, GA, Jill Hayes (Bill) of Rome, GA and Kristy Grant (Joey) of Lithia Spring, GA; and his siblings, James Thompson of Rockmart and Linda of Buchanan, GA.. He is also survived by Eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
