He was predeceased by: his wife Rosina "Zena" Ellis; his son John Ellis, Jr.; and his brother William C. Ellis. He is survived by: his son Daniel; his daughter-in-law Katie Ellis; his siblings, Richard Ellis, Thomas Ellis (Lynn) and Catherine India (Vince); and his sister-in-law Sharon Ellis.

Outside of his honorable military career, John's proudest accomplishments lie within his service to others and contributions to his community.
