He was predeceased by: his parents, Lorena Childs and Allen Payne; and his siblings, Maurice, Thurman, Vernor, Homer and Beuna.

He is survived by: his wife Francine Coker Payne; his son Douglas Payne (Melanie); his granddaughters, Jennifer Waldman (Mike) and Kimberly Norris (Vollie); and his great grandchildren, Bradley Mae, Deacon Waldman, Natalie and Hailey Norris.
