He was predeceased by: his parents, William Howard "Pat" Johnston and Ada Florence Chandler Johnston; his wife Betty Jean Jones Johnston; and his siblings, Nina Johnston Adams, Patricia Johnston Smith and William Howard "Buddy" Johnston.

He is survived by: his children, Robert Edwin Johnston Jr. (Nan) and Allison Johnston Davis (Barry); his grandchildren, Ansley Johnston Hidalgo (Javy), Carly Davis Winstead (Josh), Ashley Davis Boland (Jay), Barry Alexander Davis Jr. (Katelyn), William Chandler Davis, Robert Higdon Johnston Jr. and Winfred Coates Johnston; his great grandchildren, Sebastian, Annie Glenn, Davis, Mary Margaret "Mae", John Allen, Reeves, Jackson, Caroline and Barry III; and his sister-in-law Sara Ray Johnston. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, employees, and friends.
