He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis Nelms and Novella Nelms; his wife Joyce Landrum Nelms; and his stepsons, Michael Jordan, Ted Jordan, Thomas Ben Jordan and Jimmy Gay.

He is survived by: his son James Arnold Nelms of Savannah, GA; his granddaughter Amanda Nelms; his girlfriend Marie Smith; and his partner's children, Jeri Hillenbrand of Sarasota, FL., Haley Tirey of Sarasota, FL. and Braelyn Tirey of Sarasota, FL..
