He was predeceased by: his father Arthur Shelton "Buck" Bates; and his siblings, James "Boots" Bates, Ruis Bates, Raymond Bates, Larry Bates and Blanche Burgner.
He is survived by: his son Michael Bates (Brittany) of Moultrie; his sisters, Faye Goss of Moultrie and Janice Key of Moultrie; his grandchildren, Cameron Bates, Casey Bates, Tucker Bates and Trenton Langdale; and his nephew Kane Key. He is also survived by several other nieces and nephews.
