He was predeceased by: his parents, Sara Sanders Shumate and Grover Shumate; and his sisters, Helen Eason and Mary Jo Shumate. He is survived by: his wife Mary Shumate; his son Barry Shumate (Kim); his grandchildren, Morgan Schenk (Robert) and Nicholas Shumate (Kylie); and his siblings, Margaret Harris, Elizabeth Moon, Dorothy Needham and Jessie Shumate.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association at Diabetes.org or (800) 342-2383.
