He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard Mayes and Ruth Williams Mayes; and his siblings, Raymond Mayes, Jimmy Mayes, Mary Mayes and Smmy Mayes.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Mayes of Milledgeville; his sons, John Mayes of Petersburg, VA and George Mayes of Petersburg, VA; his stepchildren, Cindy Powers of Milledgeville and Harry Millis, Jr. (Monica) of Jones County; and his pet Georgia. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren.
