He was predeceased by: his parents, James Helms and Mary Helms; and his sister Vicki Jourdain-Leger. He is survived by: his wife Elisha Helms; his daughter Julie; his son-in-law Richard Kurland of Canton; his grandchildren, Richard James Kurland and Alyssa Jeanne Kurland; his brother John; his sister-in-law Diane Helms; his sister Diane; his brother-in-law Vince Rountree; his brother Marvin Helms; and his brother-in-law Yvonnick Jourdain-Leger. He is also survived by 4 nephews.
