He was predeceased by: his father Colan Ray Sheppard; and his wife Genelle Lee Mixon Sheppard. He is survived by: his children, Robert Sheppard, Jr. (Sandy) of Milledgeville, Laurie Griffin of Milledgeville and Lisa Massari (Michael) of Dacula; and his grandchildren, Chris Deal, Dale Griffin, Payton Sheppard, Anna Belle Sheppard and Seth Massari. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
