He was predeceased by: his stepfather Buck Grimm; and his mother-in-law Fay Youngblood. He is survived by: his wife Denise Patterson of Lavonia, GA; his children, Sara Watson, Stephanie P. Hale of Alderson, WV, Shey P. Ransdell of Panama City, FL, Jessie M. of Hiram, GA, Patterson III of Hiram, GA and Josh Little (Allison) of Hiram, GA; his siblings, Juanita Savage, Diane Hinkle, William "Billy" Patterson of Clifton Forge and Roy David Patterson of Clifton Forge; and his grandchildren, Kamden, Parker, Dylan, Bella, Jessica, Sky, Paige, Dustin, Justin, Nanci and Niomi. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
