He was predeceased by: his parents, A. B. Sowell and Frankie Parrish Sowell; his siblings, Anne Holley and Don Sowell; and his great-uncle Lloyd Sowell.

He is survived by: his wife Helen Ganas Sowell of Lake Park; his sons, Donnie Sowell (Angie) and Ben Sowell of Lake Park; his grandchildren, Ava Sowell, Gavin Sowell and Ivey Grace Sowell; and his sister Susan Courson (Mike) of Valdosta. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
