He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Avery Oakes, Jr. and Joyce Lee Bowden Oakes; his daughters, Eliza Oakes and Stephanie Ann Wasdin; his granddaughter Abigail Elisa Wasdin; and his brother Lowell Eugene Oakes.
He is survived by: his son Stephen Clifton Oakes of Lake Park; and his brothers, John Bowden Oakes and Duluth.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will celebrate Melvin's life with a service to be held at a later date.
