He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl S. Smith and Ruby Thomas Smith; his wife Frankie M. Smith; his son James W. "Jimmy" Dunbar, Jr.; and his siblings, W. C. Smith and Elizabeth Cantrell.

He is survived by: his daughter Ann Mohr (Walt); his grandchildren, Steve Dunbar, Todd Jones, Lee Ann Tanks (William) and Shannon Anglin (Archie); and his great grandchildren, Alec and Justin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Smitty requests donations be made to Shiloh Hills Christian School, 260 Hawkins Store Road NE, Kennesaw, GA 30144.
