He was predeceased by: his parents, John Fuller Atkinson, Jr. and Emmie Mae Culpepper Atkinson; and his brother Johnny Atkinson. He is survived by: his girlfriend Kathy Butler Sellers of Forsyth; his children, John Taylor Atkinson (Crystal) of Warner Robins, Ashley Atkinson Powell of Forsyth and Emily Atkinson of Tifton; and his grandchildren, Emmie Powell and Jaxson Powell.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to donor's favorite charity.
