He was predeceased by: his parents, John B. Peterson and Louana Roberson Peterson; his nephew David Herbert Barrett (Lori); and his siblings, Edward Peterson, Everett Peterson, Vivian Cooper, Mary Elizabeth Bowen and Hazel Peterson Barrett.

He is survived by: his nieces and nephews, Becky Earley (Mark), Georgia, Carol Ellis, Bill Barrett (Gail), Marilyn Ashley, Danny Peterson and Scott Peterson.
