He was predeceased by: his parents, Burl Messer, Sr. and Viola Messer; and his sister Barbara Courson. He is survived by: his wife Janice Dykes Messer of Jesup; his daughters, Tammy West (Andy) of Jesup and Teri Godwin (James) of Screven; his sisters, Shirley Peiter (Charles) of Springfield and Patsy Ogden of Jesup; and his grandchildren, Katelyn, Andrew West, Anna and Jacob Godwin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
