He was predeceased by: his parents, Jewell Cates and Martha Cates; his wife Elizabeth Inez "Molly" Cates; his son Jewell Henry "Jay" Cates Jr.; his siblings, Dene Jenkins and Marvin Cates; and his nephews, Danny Armstrong and Freddie Booth.
He is survived by: his children, Penny (Tony Johnson), Jewellene Shumake of Snellville, GA, Lee (Tonya Cates) and Sharlene (Michael Holcombe); his foster son David (Kathy Bailey); his sister Margaret Armstrong of Jefferson, GA; and his brother-in-law Arthur "Boy" Feather. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
