He is survived by: his wife Lois Baker Cowan of Hoboken, GA; his children, James Cowan, Jr. (Dana) of Waycross, GA, Barbara Jean Cowan of Douglas, GA, Tracy Lynn Cooper of Ocala, FL, Roger Scott Cowan of Hoboken, GA and Jenna Archer; his grandchildren, Jacqueline Mercer, Brittany Chamblin, Joel Cooper, Matthew Cowan, Skyler Cowan, Katelynn Cooper, Kendra Cowan, Alyssa Cowan, Kadence Cowan, Allison Cowan, Anniston Cowan and Cori Cowan; his great grandchildren, Eli Scott Cowan, Samuel Aaron Cowan, Benjamin Cowan, Hunter Chamblin, Rylee Chamblin, Rhett Mercer and Emilia Jaymes Mercer; and his siblings, Joan Repici, David F. Cowan, Jr., Catherine Olson, Mabel Cowan, Libby Keever, Mary P. Dougherty and Theresa Boyles. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
