It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joe Wethrol Gaines of Hartwell, Georgia, born in Elberton, Georgia, who passed away on February 19, 2023, at the age of 87, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his spouse Shelby Jean Adams Gaines; his father John William Carswell Gaines, Sr.; and his siblings, Carswell Gaines, Jr., Mamie Shumate, Rosa Partain, Fannie Teasley, Eula Herring, Pauline Skelton, Albert "Mutt" Gaines and Jackie Stratton.
He is survived by: his children, Ronnie Gaines of Dewy Rose, Mike (Betsy Gaines), Jenny (Tommy Stripling) and Tim (Amanda Gaines); his sister Geraldyn Bessinger of Elberton; and his grandchildren, Brad Gaines, Corey, Carla Gaines, Justin Gaines, Caitlin Gaines, Jon DeClue, Tate, Meghann Gaines, Mason, Morgan Gaines, Walt Gaines and Emma Suttles. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
