He was predeceased by: his parents, Simon Lamar Mason and Edna Mason (Nail); and his sister Elizabeth Mason. He is survived by: his wife Mary Anne Mason of Hahira, Georgia; his children, James Robert Mason of Nixa, Missouri and Mary Beth Hines (Jeremy) of Conrad, Iowa; his grandchildren, Xander Mason, Xia Mason, Xoey Mason, Xayden Mason, Xiley Mason, Xylan Mason, Piper Hines and Ripley Hines; and his brother Cony Mason (Freda) of Fayetteville, Georgia. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
