He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hillyer Young Thornton and Elizabeth Fletcher Thornton; his former wife Frances Thornton; his siblings, Milton Thornton (Anne), Bob Thornton (Doll), Jessie Thornton, Ed Thornton, Martha Thornton Bell (Howard) and Lucy Thornton; his siblings-in-law, Douglas White, Johnny Morris and Martha Duffy Thornton; his daughter-in-law Deborah Smith Thornton; his grandson Luke Thornton; and his great grandchild Brianna Thornton.
He is survived by: his wife Miss Frances Nabers; his children, Jan Greene (Norm) of Gray, Neil Thornton (Margaret) of Gray, Sam Thornton (Joan) of Monticello, Paul Thornton (Ellen) of Dahlonega, Georgia, Ed Thornton (Lee) of Dalton and Joe Thornton (Tanya) of Gray; his sisters, Mary White of John's Creek and Sara Morris of Gray; and his sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann Thornton and Joan Thornton. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
