Larry Dawn Bowie Obituary

Larry Dawn Bowie May 18, 1946 — November 4, 2023 Larry Bowie, age 77, of Douglasville, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023. He was born May 18, 1946 in Columbus, GA to the late Clarence Bowie and the late Katherine Bowie.

Larry was an extraordinarily gifted man. He was a musician who performed with Roy Orbison and the Candymen as well his own group The Back Alley Bandits. He shared a stage with many famous musicians such as Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. After mostly retiring from the road, he had a studio in Atlanta, Music from Bellingrath, where musicians could come any time day or night to record or jam.

Larry was a peace-loving man who served during the Vietnam War by establishing Benning House at Fort Benning where soldiers who suffered from addiction or mental health issues could receive treatment. Larry later taught psychology at Dalton Junior College. There he led a group of students who called themselves the "Dalton Gang", some of the many who benefited from his wisdom and guidance. He continued to inspire young minds as a mentor through Douglas County Schools. His adventurous side had him performing as an extra in several productions. His favorite was in "The Long Riders".

An ardent animal lover, Larry spent his later years caring for a colony of feral cats and hanging out in the hammock with his beloved dogs Scout and Koko.

Larry was a devoted family man. He loved being a girl dad and seeing the world through her eyes. He also enjoyed more than anything being PopPop to his granddaughters. And then, last year, Larry was united with a newly-found daughter with whom he shared a love of music and animals that transcended any DNA test.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Susan, his daughter Valerian (Dustin) Satterfield of Austell, his daughter Jody (Richie) Nelson of Macon, grandchildren Dawn Satterfield, Daisy Satterfield and David Brookins, his brother Gerald Bowie of LaGrange and host of friends and family who all miss him terribly.

According to Larry's wishes he was cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 19 from 1pm to 4pm at The Green Room Restaurant, 1391 Veterans Memorial Hwy Suite 114, Mableton, GA.

Any musician/singer who worked with Larry is welcome to perform or just share stories from back in the day. Friends and family are welcome to join us.

Messages of condolence may be sent to http://www.jones-wynn.com. Jones-Wynn Funeral Home Inc. and Crematory of Douglasville is in charge of the arrangements.

“Condolences o the family. Very saddened by the news of Larry’s passing. I worked for several years with him as part of the filming crew for the show Atlanta Jazz and Blues, and for Larry’s creation of the show centered around Americana music. He was a consummate professional at his work and he was funny and kind and always a pleasure to work with. Work was a better place when Larry was there……loving prayers to all.”
