He was predeceased by: his parents, Emory Gordon McDowell and Annie Belle Cone McDowell; his wife Margaret Ann McCarty McDowell; and his siblings, Margaret McDowell Schultz, Lois McDowell Cox, Willadean Sculley and Horace McDowell.

He is survived by: his son Marvin Emory McDowell of Doerun; his grandchildren, Marvin Andrew McDowell of Autreyville and Callie Ann Bell of Moultrie; his great grandchildren, Chloe Adams, Ellie Bell, Jake Bell and Max Bell; his sisters, Shirley Best of Jamestown, TN and Carolyn Enfinger of Dothan, AL; and his brother-in-law Lamar McCarty (Joyce) of Decatur, TN..
