She was predeceased by: her parents, William Leslie and Thelma M. Beard; her husband Floyd Elmo Shorter, Sr. (Joe); and her siblings, William, Lona and Patricia.

She is survived by: her daughter Marsha McCaskill; her son-in-law Samuel McCaskill of Covington, GA; her sons, Floyd (Johnene Shorter, Jr.), Albert (Beth Shorter), Richard (Joy Shorter), Randy (Donna Shorter) and Douglas (Chris Shorter); her brother Larry Beard; and her sister-in-law Jeanie Beard of Clinton, IN. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
