He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas George Holmes and Fredrica Trundy Holmes; his sister Beth Staples; his nephews, Chris Gray and Michael Haines; and his father-in-law George William Haines, Jr..

He is survived by: his wife Maria Haines Holmes; his mother-in-law Gwen Haines; his brother-in-law Ralph Staples of Bangor; and his brothers, Gary (Theresa Haines), Todd (Barbara Haines), Scott (Donna Haines) and Jeff (Beth Haines). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and all of Maria's extended family.

Flowers will be accepted, but donations may be made to the John B. Amos Cancer Center in Richard's memory, to the Columbus Hospice on Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia, Wynnton Methodist Church, Columbus, Georgia.
