He was predeceased by: his parents, John William, Sr. and Gladys Nobles Kirkpatrick; his son Sam Kirkpatrick; and his sister Jackie Chapman. He is survived by: his wife Gay Dennard Kirkpatrick of Cary; his children, Dan Kirkpatrick (Sherryan Yarborough) of Greenville, SC, Lena Oates (James L.) of Register and Julie Champion of Dublin; his grandchildren, Robbie Rowe (Maegan), Lauren Rowe, Eli Kirkpatrick, Abi Oates, Emi Oates and Luc Oates; his great grandchildren, R. J. Rowe and Knox Rowe; and his sisters, Sarah Faulk of Twiggs County, Janet Kirkpatrick Shelnutt of Allentown, Sue Rutherford (Bobby) of Cochran and Shelia Kitchens (Mike) of Gordon. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
