He was predeceased by: his parents, John Henry and Jewell Miles Burson; his son Joseph Ronald Burson Jr.; his wife Carole Sheats Burson; and his brother-in-law Scott Butler.
He is survived by: his close friend Barbara Griffin; his children, Dr. Jim Burson (Karen), Lee Burson (Dean Jordan) and Elizabeth "Cissy" Persichetti (John); his brother Dr. John; his sister-in-law Barbara Burson; his sister Joy Burson Butler; his grandchildren, Bradley, Graham, Betsy, Ansley and John Nathan; and his caregivers, Carolyn Taylor, Wanda Loveless, Tara Swint, Patricia Williams, Kay Wynn, Phyllis Moore and Elaine Ward.
