He was predeceased by: his wife Bobbie Bentley Cooper; his parents, John Harvan and Vesta Wells Cooper; and his brother Ernest Cooper. He is survived by: his children, Ricky M. Cooper of Suwanee, Jeff, Lynn Cooper of Bishop, Karen and Scott Atha of Carnesville; his grandchildren, Anna, Adam Cooper of Bishop, Will, Megan Atha of Homer and Walker Atha of Carnesville; his brothers, Travis (Linda Cooper), Larry (Beverly Cooper) and Carlton (Margaret Cooper); and his siblings-in-law, Jerry, Violet Bentley of Snellville and Dewey Bentley of Winder. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
