He was predeceased by: his parents, John Sterling and Zelma Mae Smelser Sterling; his siblings, Chester, John Jr., Willie Helen and Libby; and his former wife Regina Townsend.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Sterling; his sons, Mike Sterling (Melissa) of Wartrace and Rusty Sterling (Shelly) of Dallas, Georgia; and his grandchildren, Evan, Aidan and Eden.
