He was predeceased by: his parents, George Imer Cook and Sadie Horton Cook; his brother George Wayne Cook; and his great grandchildren, Loran Hardeman and Haddie Hardeman.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia Donnell Cook of Cairo; his children, Stephen W. Cook (Shana) of Valdosta, Georgia, Dennis K. Cook of Cairo, David K. Cook of Hahira and Kandee K. Avila (Luis) of Jemison, Alabama; his grandchildren, Brittany Spitzer (Kurt), D. J. Cook, Meshea Hardeman (Craig), Heaven Leigh Jacobs (Mark), Kamil Reynolds (Anthony), Christopher Watson, Haedyn Cook and Bryanna Watson; and his great grandchildren, Ava McKeon, Shephard Hardeman, Mabel Hardeman, Cora Hardeman, Penelope Reynolds, Pippa Reynolds, Pricilla Reynolds, Angel Watson and Kayden Watson.

“Donnell, just like everyone else, I was shocked to learn about Vernon. I know the service was yesterday and I hope a lot of our classmates came to pay their last respects to him. Over the past 3 years, I have gotten to know Vernon and the special man he was. He probably knew more about the history of Cairo and Grady County than any other classmate and every conversation we had was fun and informational as we shared many memories of growing up in Cairo. I will truly miss him. Max Mayo”
