He was predeceased by: his parents, James Benjamin and Mavis Lee Mathis; his stepdaughter Elizabeth Wiley Brown; and his siblings, Billy Mathis, Wendell Mathis, Robert "Bob" Mathis and Ruby Mathis Brantley.
He is survived by: his wife Dottie Mathis; his children, Alan Mathis (Vicki), Benjamin "Ben" Mathis (Carol), Steve Mathis (Darcy) and Julie Bradshaw (Craig); his sisters, Louise Bagwell (Stan) of North Carolina and Joyce Taylor (Bill) of Sparta, GA; and his siblings-in-law, Linda Parks (Hansel) of Buford, GA, Kathy Ramey of Flowery Branch, GA, Betty Mathis of Atlanta, GA and Wayne Brantley of McIntyre, GA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
