He was predeceased by: his parents, Layton D. Sutherland and Irma Fay Ragan Sutherland; and his son Kevin Sutherland. He is survived by: his wife Betse Sutherland of Buena Vista; his daughters, Heather Raulston (Shaun) of Buena Vista and Cassie Humphrey (Vernon) of Buena Vista; his grandchildren, Christopher Humphrey, Lyza Raulston, Ian Raulston, James Forsyth, Aza Raulston, Ragan Raulston, Lexi Humphrey, Uzziah Raulston, Ezra Raulston, Kevin Humphrey and Zipporah Raulston; and his sister Laurie Sutherland (Vince Stockwell) of Washington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

During his time in Hiawassee he served as a scout leader and Will and Betse donated the chimes in the Church by the Hiawassee Hardware.
