He was loved and cherished by many people including: his brother Billy Thornton; his wife Etta Jackson Thornton of Bowdon; his son David Thornton of Pampa, Texas; his stepchildren, Pam Huckeba (Joey) of Carrollton, Kathy Young (Chuck) and Tim Thompson (Paula) of Bowdon; and his sisters, Marcella Waddy of Newnan and Vicky Miller (Jerry) of Villa Rica. He was also cherished by one grandchild and six step grandchildren.
