He was predeceased by: his parents, John D. Newberry and Willie Mae Welch Newberry; his daughter Sharon McClendon (Cory); and his siblings, John Newberry and Betty Newberry.

He is survived by: his wife Edna Newberry; his children, Theresa Sheffield (Tim), Marilyn Brackin (Charles) and Marcus Newberry (Melissa); and his sisters, Ruthene Newberry and Peggy Carter. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
