He was predeceased by: his parents, James William Gaines and Azalee Akins Gaines; his wife Colleen Cain Gaines; and his brothers, Tim, Ricky and Mac "Whitlo" Gaines.
He is survived by: his children, Vince Gaines of Maysville, Donna Smith of Maysville and Deborah Bowden (Kenny George) of Blairsville; his siblings, Janie Keith of Jefferson, Paralee Perry (L. B.) of Jefferson, Harold Gaines (Sue) of Winder and Danny Gaines (Pam) of Villa Rica; and his grandchildren, Pam Dalton (Shannon), LeAnn Lance (Kristen), Michael Bowden and Kim Bowden (Chris Walker).
