He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Pierce Matson and Mary Alice Biggs Parker; his father-in-law Col. James Lee Templeton, Jr.; his sister Suzanne Matson Carter; and his pet Stella.

He is survived by: his close friend Bonnie Blue; his wife Sharon Templeton Matson of Baldwin; his children, Nathan James Matson (Marian) of Baldwin, Whitney Brook Matson of Jackson and Mary Dean Chevalier (James) of Lawrenceville; his mother-in-law Dianne Templeton of Lula; his brother Robert Pierce Matson of West Virginia; and his grandchildren, James Gage Chevalier, Caspian Alexander Chevalier, Anastasia Dawn Gasque and Gwynever Raine Matson.
