He was predeceased by: his wife Katherine Templeton Harkness; his parents, Daniel Hoover Harkness, Sr. and Frances Larson Harkness; and his sister Judith Ann Harkness. He is survived by: his son Daniel Hoover Harkness III; his daughter-in-law Courtney Begina Harkness; and his grandchildren, Jackson Daniel Harkness and Katherine Alida Harkness.
