She was predeceased by: her parents, Richard Whitney and Virginia Whitney. She is survived by: her husband Dick; her children, David, Elizabeth and Richard; her daughters-in-law, Janice, Melissa and Maggie; her sisters, Ruth and Martha; her grandchildren, Brendan, Kelly, Taylor, Grace, Adam and Eli; and her great grandchildren, Emma Kate, Audrey, Stella and Maddux.

Joan was also involved in several charities promoting literacy, including the FERST Readers Foundation, and a campaign with rural libraries to get books into the hands of underprivileged children.
