It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Hugh Gordon Cates of Atlanta, Georgia, who passed away on November 16, 2024, at the age of 96, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
As we bid Hugh Gordon farewell, let us not mourn the absence of his physical form, but rather celebrate the essence of his spirit that lingers in the spaces between moments. For Hugh Gordon is not truly gone, but merely transformed, his energy intertwined with the fabric of the universe itself, forever dancing among the stars.
He was predeceased by: his wife Lois Bizzell Cates. He is survived by: his children, Suzanne Martin and Dr. Chris Cates; and his grandchildren, Hannah Martin, Callie Martin, Nathaniel Cates, Andrew Cates and Caroline Cates Ivie. He is also survived by 9 great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 20th 2024 at 1:00 PM at the McConnell Memorial Baptist Church N Main (84 Church St, Hiawassee, GA 30546). A burial was held on Wednesday, November 20th 2024 at the Osborn Cemetery.
He was also the Secretary of the Richard B. Russell Foundation where he created an oral history that is housed in the University of Georgia archives.
