He was predeceased by: his parents, William Eugene "Gene" Donaldson and Willie Mae Simpson Donaldson; and his grandson Andrew D'Alessandro. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Colquhoun; his brother William E. Donaldson Jr. (Bill); his children, Colleen Donaldson, Earl Donaldson, Jr., John Donaldson (Lori) and David Donaldson (Michael Daly); his grandchildren, James Donaldson (Danielle), Daniel Donaldson (Kun Wang), Anna D'Alessandro, Maggie Donaldson (Brianna Courchene), Thomas Donaldson (Jordan), Nathan Donaldson and Lucy Carter (Gray); and his great grandchildren, Jaqueline and Charlotte Donaldson.

The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, who maintains the Donaldson-Bannister Farm as a public park and gathering place for those who also love history and who will write the next chapter.
