He was predeceased by: his sister Helen Tanksley. He is survived by: his wife Martha Nelms (Elrod); his sons, J. Michael Nelms, Jr. (Shannon) of Watkinsville, GA and Doug Nelms (Judy) of Athens, GA.; his grandchildren, Brooklynn Nelms of Wilmington, NC, Avery Nelms of Athens, GA and Rhett Vanderford (Victoria) of Jefferson, GA; and his siblings, Johnny Nelms (Sara) of Athens, GA and Joan Whitehead of Bishop, GA. He is also survived by numerous nieces / nephews.
