He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Burns and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Phillips Burns; his wife Syble Shockley Burns; and his siblings, LeRoy Burns, Oscar Burns, Wilson Burns, Frances Wade, Nancy Cunningham, Vernie Johnson and Eunice Shirley.
He is survived by: his daughters, LaWanda (Kevin Hulsey) and Rhonda (Jason Stamey); his grandchildren, Chris Hulsey and Nate Stamey; his great grandchildren, Penelope Hulsey and Izzy Hulsey; and his sister Minnie Lee Burns of Carnesville. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
