He was predeceased by: his former wife Dorothy Sims Bates. He is survived by: his wife Marjorie Moore Bates; and his children, William Bates of Ball Ground, Shirley Bates Benton and Lynn Bates of Alpharetta. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
